教授 Hershberger teaches a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses, including first-year art history surveys, junior- and senior-level classes on 现代艺术, 当代艺术, 现代建筑, history of photography, a variety of graduate seminars on those and related topics.

Dr. Hershberger works in the areas of modern and 当代艺术 history and in the history and theory of photography. Dr. Hershberger was the 2004 Ansel Adams Fellow at the Center for Creative Photography, 2007 Coleman Dowell Fellow at New York University, inaugural John Teti Fellow at the New Hampshire Institute of 艺术 for Fall 2008, 和圣. In 2011, Hershberger won a CIWAS Resident Fellowship at the Cody Institute for Western American 博天堂官方网站, in 2014 Hershberger co-wrote and won (with BGSU's Dr. Mark Munson) the Glanz Family 博天堂官方网站 Award for Interdisciplinary Innovation and Collaboration. 2022年夏天, Hershberger received a grant to join with an international group of teachers at Yale University for their 2022 Institute in Technical 艺术历史, organized by the Yale Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, Yale University 艺术 Gallery, Yale Center for British 艺术, funded by the Kress Foundation. Hershberger has published multiple peer-reviewed articles in the 杂志 摄影史, among his publications are refereed articles in the 艺术杂志, Early Popular Visual Culture, 文选Husserliana, Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, 博天堂官方网站院, 亚洲艺术. He has published a large (86 edited articles, 476-pages total) compendium entitled Photographic Theory: An Historical Anthology (Boston and Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell, 2014). Three very positive reviews of the anthology have appeared in the 杂志 莱奥纳多, on iPhotoCentral，而在 摄影史 杂志. In 2015, Hershberger received an Insight Award from the 社会 for Photographic Education.
